What is GMRS?

GMRS stands for General Mobile Radio Service, a type of two-way radio communication service. It's a land-mobile radio service available for personal use. GMRS operates on a number of frequencies in the UHF band, providing a range of up to several miles, depending on the terrain and the power of the radio equipment used. GMRS radios are used for personal communications, including recreation, hunting, fishing, hiking, and in vehicles.

GMRS is allowed up to 50W, and has 22 channels, which are shared with FRS, with 8 additional repeater channels that are exclusive to GMRS.

why do i need a gmrs?

GMRS licenses cover your immediate family so it's great for family outings, offroading, and hiking.  The FCC has in recent years taken away GMRS as a business tool and made it more for family/personal use.  So if you are a ham and have family members who are not it's perfect for you. Radios are inexpensive and easy to use.  GMRS radios are compatible with the bubble pack radios you get at the big box stores and there is no test just an online form to fill out.

How do i get a gmrs license?

First Step is optaining an FRS number, you can register by going here and clicking register which is located near the bottom.

After Recieving your FRN, access the log in page and click log in, at the left hand corner you will see a link that says Apply For a New License

You will choose ZA General Mobile Radio (GMRS) from the drop down when asked to select service.

Then you just fill out the form and in a couple days you will have a call sign.  It's super easy and only costs $35 for ten years, like mentioned before it covers your immediate family and the radios are easy to get, inexpensive, and easy to use.
